Ruth Hinman was born on February 11, 1782 in Connecticut.^2,3
She was the daughter of Phineas Hinman and Rhoda Hubbel.¹
Ruth married Edman Oviatt on June 27, 1803.⁴
In the spring of 1805, Ruth Hinman and Edman Oviatt moved to Braceville, Trumbull County, Ohio. Mrs. Edman Oviatt one day heard the pig squealing in the pen, and, going out to see what was the matter, saw a bear seize the pig and rush for the woods. She called her husband, and they followed it for a mile before he shot the bear.⁵
The census of 1850 shows: Edmond Oviatt, 66, a farmer with $2000 real estate; and Ruth Oviatt, 68; listed with Mary Oviatt, James Lawton and Cynthia Lawton
living at Braceville, Trumbull County, Ohio.
Living with them was Sarah Oviatt, 9, attending school.³
Ruth died on January 29, 1858 at age 75.²

Capt. Samuel Hinman was born on January 6, 1705/6 in Stratford, Connecticut.^3,4
He was the son of Edward Hinman Jr. and Hannah Burrowes.²
Capt. Samuel Hinman was a surveyor of land. He removed when a young man to Litchfield, after which he became one of the early proprietors and first settlers of the town of Goshen. He bid off one right in Goshen, Feb. 14, 1738, and had the 46th choice for his first division. His first survey bill of about 150 acres was dated 7 Dec 1738. He surveyed the town and lands for individuals in Goshen. He appears to have erected a log house there as early as 1738 or 1739, and was one of the proprietor's committee for laying our most of the early divisions of land in Goshen, and was frequently called to fill the ordinary offices of the town. His brother John was for a time at Goshen, aiding Capt. Samuel in his surveys, but returned to Stratford, where he afterward settled and died.³
Although 70 years of age at the breaking out of the Revolutionary war, he served as a soldier in the Continental army.¹
Samuel died in 1784 in Goshen, Connecticut.³
