Major Jonathan Houghton1

  • Major Jonathan Houghton was born on February 28, 1761 in Harvard, Massachusetts, son of John and Esther (Tarbell) Houghton.2,3
  • Major Jonathan Houghton was a cooper and farmer.4
  • On October 17, 1777 Major Jonathan Houghton served in the Rev. War in tbe campaign against Burgoyne.5
  • Jonathan married Rachel Hale, daughter of Corporal Benjamin Hale and Mary Taylor, on June 26, 1783 in Harvard, Massachusetts.5
  • In or before 1795, Major Jonathan Houghton and Rachel Hale moved to what was afterward Waterford, Oxford County, Maine. He was a petitioner for the incorporation of that town in 1795, and appeared as a taxpayer on its first roll in 1797. He was a leading man in the town, had the title of "Major." He was selectman in 1805 and 1807.5
  • Between 1805 and 1807 Major Jonathan Houghton was a selectman.4
  • On January 21, 1822, He married secondly, Mary Bryant of Waterford, on 21 Jan 1822 in Waterford, by whom he had no additional children..
  • Jonathan died on January 10, 1840 at age 78.6
  • He was buried in Elm Vale Cemetery, Waterford, Oxford County, Maine.6
