b. July 7, 1803, d. October 29, 1872
  • Reference: 0124a
  • John P. Neal was born on June 17, 1798 in Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire, while the father was keeping a prominent inn. John Neal grew up in his native village, but afterward went to Dover and learned the carpenter’s and cabinet-maker’s trades. After completing the latter, he went into a factory for making bobbins for winding thread, and stood at one turning lathe for fourteen years. This long continued application caused his health to fail, and buying a small farm near Dover, he turned his attention to agricultural pursuits. Finding this employment agreed with him, but desiring a broader field in which to labor, he removed to the Prairie State in 1838, where, after improving his original homestead, he secured large landed possessions. He became the owner of more than one thousand acres of land in this and other counties prior to his death.2,3
  • He was baptized on July 7, 1803 in First Congregational Church, Rochester, Strafford County, New Hampshire.1
  • He was the son of Moses Leavitt Neal and Ruth Prentice.1
  • John married Sarah Clements on January 15, 1818.4
  • The census of 1850 shows: John Neal, 52, a farmer with $3500 real estate; and Sally Neal, 51; listed with Moses Neal, Abigail Neal and John P. Neal
living at Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois.
Also living there was Wm. Springer, 20, a farmer with $6000 real estate, from Ohio.5

  • The census of 1860 shows: John P. Neal, 63, a farmer with $15,000 real estate and $6,000 personal estate; and Sally Neal, 63; listed with Moses Neal
living at Medina Twp., Peoria County, Illinois.
Also living there was a farmhand, Amos Rayer, 27, from Penna.6

  • The census of 1870 shows: John P. Neal, 72, a farmer with $100,000 real estate and $1,000 personal estate; and Sarah Neal, 72, keeping house; listed with Moses Neal, Larosco Green, Arthur Dow Green and William Green
living at Medina Twp., Peoria County, Illinois.
Also living there was Sophia Neal, 30, from New Hampshire, at home.7

  • John died on October 29, 1872 in Medina Twp., Peoria County, Illinois, at age 69. A life of unswerving industry, pure habits, and a sterling character, gave him a warm place in the hearts of all who knew him. He became somewhat more liberal in his religious belief than his forefathers had been. He was generous and public-spirited, transmitting these qualities to his son, of whom we write. He was a Republican, and once served as County Commissioner, although he was not an office seeker.8,3
  • He was buried in Neal Cemetery, Medina Twp., Peoria County, Illinois.8
