  • Esther Taylor was born on August 18, 1765 in Harvard, Massachusetts.2
  • She was the daughter of Charles Taylor and Mercy Stearns.1
  • Esther married Israel Hale, son of Corporal Benjamin Hale and Mary Taylor, on November 12, 1782 in Harvard, Massachusetts, performed by Josiah Whitney, Esq.3
  • The census of 1820 shows: Israel Hale and Esther Taylor listed with Eber Hale
    living at Waterford, Oxford County, Maine.
    Also in the household were one free white male between sixteen and eighteen [Eber], and one free white female of ten and under sixteen [unknown]. The family had three persons engaged in agriculture.4

  • Maine estate schedule states that at age '55, [she was] feeble and infirm, often under the care of physicians.5

    I hereby Certify that I hold the Office of Town Clerk in the town of Harvard, and have held said office since March 5, 1832. And that I have this day examined the Harvard town Records in Vol. 2, page 210.     On this thirty first day of July in thee year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty three personally appeared before the Judge of Probate for the County of Oxford, it being a court of record, Esther Hale, a resident of Waterford in the County of Oxford, aged seventy seven years, who being first and duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provisions made by the act of Congress, passed July 7, 1838, entitled "An act granting half pay and pensions to certain widows." That she is the widow of Israel Hale, who was a private in the army of the Revolutionary war, that a pension was granted him under an act of Congress passed June seventh, eeighteen hundred and thirty two, and the proof of the service performed by thee said Israel Hale is now on file in the Pension office.

    She further declares that she was married to the said Israel Hale on the twelfth day of November seventeen hundred and eighty two, that her husband, the aforesaid Israel Hale died on the sixteenth day of May eighteen hundred and forty one, that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but the marriage took place prior to the first of January seventeen hundred and ninety four, viz: at the time above stated, and that she still [illeg. due to fold in paper].

    Subscribed and sworn to the day and year above written before me... ... Judge."6
  • "Esther Hale, widow of Israel Hale, who served in the Revolutionary war as a private.

    Inscribed on the Roll at the rate of 80 Dollars --- Cents per annum, to commence on the 4th day of March, 1848.

    Certificate of Pension issued the 17th day of June 1848 and sent to Levi Whitman, Norway, Me.

    Recorded on Roll of Pensioners under act February 2, 1848, Page 13, Vol. 1."7
