Rachel S. Cameron

b. March 31, 1871
  • Rachel S. Cameron was born on March 31, 1871 in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.1,2
  • Rachel married Chandler Hale, son of Eugene Hale and Mary Douglas Chandler, on September 28, 1897.
  • The census of 1910 shows: Chandler Hale, a clerk with the Dept. of State; and Rachel C. Hale listed with Chandler Hale Jr., Donald Cameron Hale, Mary C. Hale and Eugene H. Hale
    living at Washington, D.C.
Also in the household were two servants, Louise Aouse, 29, from Germany, and Nellie Lee, 30, from Ireland.1

  • In 1929, in Prince George's County, Maryland, an estate of two hundred two and a quarter (202.25) acres, with house, were sold to Rachel Cameron Hale, the wife of Chandler Hale, a diplomatic official. Mrs. Hale was responsible for changing the name of the estate from "Poplar Hill" to "His Lordship's Kindness." She installed wiring and plumbing in the house and converted the chapel into a library. She changed the landscaping of the former rose garden and, after a damaging fire in the carriage house, tore that structure down and used the salvaged bricks to build a garage with a residence apartment above for her chauffeur.3
  • In 1940, the Hales sell "His Lordship's Kindness" to Caroline E. Dunham.3
