John Francis Jamin Clark1

b. July 23, 1831, d. April 28, 1899
  • John Francis Jamin Clark was born on July 23, 1831.2
  • He was the son of James Alfred Clark and Catherine Rust.1
  • John Francis Jamin Clark was a Union soldier in the Civil War.2
  • John died on April 28, 1899 at age 67 In a notice of his decease the Salem Gazette said: "Mr. Clark died 28 Apr 1899, of old-fashioned consumption. The day was the anniversary of his mother's death, which occurred twenty-six years before. For years Mr. Clark has been feeble, but only within the last four months has he given up his work. His five children died of consumption before the age of thirty-five. Two sons' wives and two grandchildren also were victims of this disease, until now, of all the happy household, only the wife and one granddaughter, Miss Ethel Clarke are left. In his early life Mr. Clarke worked in Salem as engineer for J. Gibney. When the Civil War came he left Salem and enlisted in Company I of the 23d Regiment, M. V. M., and went into camp at Lynnfield under the late Capt. John Hobbs. His enlistment was for three years, but before his term expired he was discharged for physical disability. On his return, or as soon after as his strength was recuperated, he went back to his old work, serving as engineer at the Countyhouse for several years. Later he occupied the same position at the Ipswich woolen mill, where he remained until illness came upon him. His last work was gate-tender for the Boston & Maine railroad. He always has been an honored member of Gen. James Appleton Post G. A. R. One of the kindest-hearted of men, he was ready to do others a service whenever there was need. He was a good citizen and a pleasant neighbor. Although his sorrows seemed at times more than he could endure, he has borne them bravely and manfully. He leaves a widow and one granddaughter, who, since the death of her parents, has been a member of his household. Of his early family four sisters and a brother survive him."3
