  • 1880, Emery Evarts Fairbank enlisted in the U.S. Army, 7th Calvary Regiment, and was promoted to assistant quartermaster. He served five years. He was naturally very ingenious, and could do almost anything. While in the army he made a fine black walnut book-case for the 1st Lieutenant, and painted the officers' and mens' quarters.1

John Henry Fairbank

b. January 21, 1817, d. May 8, 1907

  • John Henry Fairbank was Republican.2
  • He was born on January 21, 1817 in Harvard, Massachusetts.3
  • He was the son of Artemas Fairbanks and Rachel Houghton.1
  • When he was nineteen years old, he drove an eight horse team between Winchendon and Boston for the late E. Murdock, Jr., until the railroad was built in 1844.3
  • In 1843, John Henry Fairbank was Organized the First National Bank of Winchendon, and Was elected its first president, which position he held continuously ever since. 'He has long been prominent in town affairs, holding positions of responsibility, a selectman for twenty-five years, most of the time chairman of the board, an assessor for fifteen years, most of the time also chairman, and cemetery commissioner for thirty-four years in succession, save one year; and as road commissioner, or highway surveyor, he has had partial or full charge of highways in Winchendon for more than thirty years.3
  • He went into the livery business 1844 , in partnership with Henry Whitcomb, under the name Whitcomb & Fairbank Winchendon, Massachusetts.3
  • John married Mary E. Lees on June 4, 1847.2
  • In 1852, John Henry Fairbank bought the American House in Winchendon, Massachusetts.3
  • In 1864, John Henry Fairbank organized First National Bank of Winchendon, and was its first president.3
  • In 1865, marked the end of his span as landlord of the American House.3
  • And about 1868 was the end of John's involvement with livery firm of Whitcomb & Fairbank.3
  • John died on May 8, 1907 in Winchendon, Massachusetts, at age 90 of cerebral thrombosis.4

  • He taught school three terms, and then entered the Mass. Institute of Technology, where he remained two years, intending to become a civil engineer. But his father urged him to remain at home and join him in the management of the farm. This he consented to do, and he prospered. The large and commodious mansion is jointly occupied by his own and his father's family.2
  • Warren Herbert Fairbank was educated at Winchenden Acadamy, Winchendon, Massachusetts, for one term2
  • and at Lancaster Academy, Lancaster, Massachusetts, for one term.2
  • Warren married Catherine Alice Houghton, daughter of Marcellus Houghton and Catherine Charlotte Fogg, on September 14, 1876. They were second cousins. Catherine was a resident of Concord.2

  • Warren Herbert Fairbank was elected as Selectman for three years; Assessor seven years. He was a member of the School Committee fourteen years; trustee of the Public Library eleven years; trustee of the Warner Free Lecture Fund of ten thousand dollars; and trustee of the Bromfield Academy for ten years; chairman of the building Committee of the Public Library. He has peculiar gifts as a presiding officer, and has served for many years as Moderator of Town and other public meetings.2
  • Warren Herbert Fairbank was a man of good mental ability, and one of the most prominent citizens
    of the town.2
