• Eliphalet Hale was born on May 16, 1775 in Rindge, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.¹
• He was the son of Nathan Hale and Abigail Grout.¹
• After such education as the schools of Rindge and the New Ipswich Academy afforded him, he was early placed by his mother as a clerk in the store of John Cushing and Co. in Boston, and after having served his apprenticeship went into business on his own account as a merchant.²
• Eliphalet married Abigail Waters early in 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts.³
• On September 26, 1842, Eliphalet Hale and Mary Whitwell Hale moved to Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, where he spent the remainder of his life in quiet and contentment upon the competence which he had acquired in a long life of industry and integrity, with the esteem and respect of all who knew him.²
• Eliphalet died on September 26, 1852 in Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire, at age 77. His last days were brightened by the unfailing love and care of his only surviving daughter, who remained with him from his removal to Keene till his death. He was a man of unassuming modesty, of great firmness and decision of character, of most precise and methodical business habits, an accomplished bookkeeper and accountant, always faithful beyond contingency to his word, and in_short a model merchant of the old school. He never was in public life, but always took great interest in politics, was an old-school Federalist, and never wavered from his allegiance to the principles and policy of that party even long after it had ceased to exist as a party. Nothing would so rouse his wrath as what he deemed an unjust assault upon that party or its prominent leaders. Robert Safford Hale states: "I well remember in my boyhood his being present in a public , reading-room about 1840 or before, when an old gentleman, a somewhat conspicuous Democratic politician of the day, in a general political conversation, in answer to a question by some ill-informed person, 'What has become of Gov. Strong of Massachusetts?' answered coarsely, 'Oh, he's in hell long ago, where he ought to be.' Mr. Hale had till then taken no part in the conversation, but Gov. Strong was a man whom he specially revered, and he could not brook the insult to his memory. He leaped from his chair and his small, lithe, erect figure seemed actually to dilate with rage as he approached the tall stately bulk of the prominent Democrat with, 'Sir, Gov. Strong will be a ministering angel in heaven, when you, sir, are howling in hell!' Considering the fact that Mr. Hale was a most decided Unitarian, and very far from Calvinistic or so-called orthodox views of the future life, the remark was certainly somewhat pointed. The discussion terminated."
  
  In the sketch of the life of Hon. Nathan Appleton in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, vol. 16, p. 3, speaking of Mr. Appleton's early life in Boston, it says, "At his boarding-house in Quaker lane, now Congress street, he met with an old acquaintance, Eliphalet Hale, who was a schoolmate at the New Ipswich Academy, who taught him book-keeping by double entry, a knowledge of which he found so essential in his brother's counting-room, and in all his future mercantile transactions, that in his autobiography he says, 'I have always attributed * * * a great portion of the failures which take place to a want of knowledge of the proper principles of book-keeping.'"
  
  Robert Safford Hale says, "Mr. Hale was a small and slender man, with a singularly erect carriage even to old age, and most gracious and pleasing address. I used to think him the most perfect model of politeness I had ever seen."⁴
