Elkanah Andrews

b. March 4, 1732, d. June 11, 1787
  • Elkanah Andrews was born on March 4, 1732 in Dighton, Massachusetts, son of Samuel and Mary (Pitts) Andrews.1
  • Elkanah married Alice Beal, daughter of Stephen Beal and Alice Crocker.1
  • He was a sea captain, making voyages to the West Indies and South America. On one of these trips he brought home three black children as slaves, to whom he gave the names of Moses, Eneas, and Fan. After they grew up he gave them their freedom. He was selectman of Dighton in 1779 and from 1785 to 1787, and represented the town in the general court in 1786.1
  • Elkanah died on June 11, 1787 in Essequibo, British Guiana, at age 55. The inventory of his estate showed real estate valued at two thousand six hundred and eleven pounds, and personal property of one thousand eight hundred and forty-nine pounds. At his death he was possessed of two hundred and ninty-two acres of land, six houses and two stores, and held notes against forty-five individuals, ranging in amount from £173 down, including one which called for $1,000 Continental money, valued at £41.1
