  • Capt. Joseph Hale was born on February 20, 1670/71 in Newbury, Massachusetts.2
  • He was the son of Thomas Hale and Mary Hutchinson.1
  • The land where the third district school house stood in 1906 was early in his possession, and he probably settled near there. He owned considerable land and was prominent in civil life, serving as selectman, representative to the General Court, etc. He was successively ensign, lieutenant and captain in the militia, and in the early town records is called "Clerk of the band."3
  • Joseph married Mary Watson, daughter of William Watson and Sarah Perley, on November 15, 1693 or December 15, 1693 in Boxford, Massachusetts. Mary's marriage is a novelty: Mr. Watson, 26 Apr 1692, covenanted with Mary to give her half his property, if she would marry Joseph Hale: Joseph's mother covenanted with him to give him half her property if he would marry Mary Watson. Probably both covenants were made—certainly Mr. Watson's was—about the time Mrs. Hale and her son removed to Boxford; perhaps just prior, and their removal was designed to bring the children more into one another's society, in the hope of hastening their marital accord. However it was, after a courtship of more than a year their marriage was consummated.4,5
  • Capt. Joseph Hale and Joanna Low published their marriage intention on September 19, 1708 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.4
  • Joseph died on February 13, 1761 in Boxford, Massachusetts, at age 89.4

b. August 7, 1777, d. August 29, 1817
  • THIS LISTING HAS NOT YET BEEN AUDITED, AND MAY NOT BE ACCURATE; A.
  • Joshua Hale was born on August 7, 1777 in Dracut, Massachusetts.2
  • He was the son of Ezekiel Hale and Abigail Sargent.1
  • Joshua married Sarah Clement in April, 1800 in Haverhill, Massachusetts.2
  • He seems to have gone as a young man with his brother Ezekiel to Haverhill, where he was in his brother's employ while English mechanics were putting in his machinery for the manufacture of cotton yarn in 1803. In that year he established himself in the south part of Worcester, Mass., and there commenced the carding of wool by machinery, following the example set by his brother Moses in Dracut in 1801. In 1810 he erected a cotton factory in Worcester, superintending the construction and erection of the machinery personally, from his observation of the English workmen on his brother Ezekiel's establishment at Haverhill. Both the cotton and woolen factories were pioneer establishments in Worcester county, these three brothers thus leading those important branches of manufacture in the three great counties of Middlesex, Essex and Worcester in Massachusetts. The machinery built under his direction at Worcester was said to be the first ever built by American mechanics. (See Lincolns Hist. of Worcester, p. 322.)

His enterprise seems not to have been financially successful, for instead of following the manufacture of woolen and cotton we find him soon after engaged in erecting similar machinery for others in Worcester county and vicinity, and again not long after in the manufacture of wagons. In 1817 he went to New Orleans with a quantity of wagons to dispose of, sold them and was attacked by yellow fever.3
  • Joshua died on August 29, 1817 in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana, at age 40. His family received no avails of the property he took to New Orleans, and were left poor. He was evidently a man of great mechanical skill, of energy
and determination, and deserving of a more successful career.4
