- When the news reached Newbury of probable fighting before Boston, Daniel Hale, then not 19 years of age, marched with other young men from Newbury to the scene of action, but did not arrive in season to take part in the battle of Bunker Hill. He then enlisted in the army, served 13 months and was discharged at White Plains, N. Y. whence he walked back to Newbury. He received for his arrears of pay $100 in Continental currency, and paid it all out for a yearling bull valued at $10.3

His will, dated 3 Aug 1820, proved 6 March, 1827, describes him as "of Rowley, yeoman, provides for wife Elizabeth, and children Francis Pickard, Daniel, Joseph R. and Edna, the latter unmarried at execution of will. The inventory filed showed personal estate valued at $1,423, and real estate at $10,191. The other three children gave receipt to Francis Pickard, executor, 23 June, 1828, Edna signing with her husband, Isaac Pickard.
He seems to have had a homestead in Byfield Parish, and another in the first parish of Rowley. He willed the former to Daniel, the latter to Francis P., and a West Newbury farm to Joseph R.3
