Failing health compelled him to ask to be relieved of the burdens of the pastorate, and he entered the work of the American Peace Society and for fourteen years he was thus engaged; but failing eyesight compelled him to leave that congenial service. In his blindness, the family read much to him, and he was thus kept in touch with passing events.1
