  • Willard Augustus Otis Haynes was born on August 2, 1852 in Natick, Massachusetts. He was educated in the public schools of Natick and Sherborne, graduated from Barre (Vt.) Academy, in 1875 and from Amherst College in 1878, then read medicine for a year with Dr. A. H. After practising for a year in Holyoke, Mass., he moved to Sabetha, Kans., in the spring of 1882, where he spent the rest of his life.

Dr. Haynes joined the church in Amherst College in 1876 and was an active member of the Congregational Church in Sabetha. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge there. Beloved as a physician, in which profession he showed as much concern for the mental as for the physical ills of his patients, he was also influential in the general life of his community, being particularly interested in the work of the public library, to which he liberally contributed and on the book committee of which he served for several years. He was loyal to the College and often spoke of the years he spent there as among the happiest of his life.1,2
