- Jonas Mason was born on May 23, 1797 in Adams Township, Washington County, Ohio.
Jonas was one of the Directors of the Washington Co. School Association in 1838 and 1845. There is a tradition that he was the first child born in the township, but this is disputed by others. Adams was at that time a new community and medical services could be obtained only at Marietta or Waterford. this circumstance made it prudent for the wives of the youthful Adams settlement to spend the period of expectancy in one of the two older communities. It is said that for more than two years after it's first settlement, no child was born on Adams territory.1 - He was the son of William Bond Mason and Susannah Coburn.1
