Captain Joseph L. Neal was born in 1782 in Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire.^3,2
He was the son of John Neal and Mary Leavitt.²
Joseph married Polly Dearborn on March 5, 1809 in Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, and on lived on the Dearborn homestead.⁴
Joseph died on September 1, 1840 in Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire. His death was caused by his horse becoming frightened at the railroad when the first locomotive passed through Hampton in 1840.²
This stone is in the row behind the obelisk bearing his and his wife's names.
He and Polly Dearborn were buried in Ring Swamp Cemetery, Hampton, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.¹

Martha Elizabeth Neal was born on September 24, 1823 in Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire.²
She was the daughter of Samuel Adams Neal and Caroline Varney.¹
Martha married Charles Trefethen on February 6, 1848 in St. John's Methodist Church, Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire, by Rev. Samuel Kelley.³
The census of 1860 shows:
Elizabeth Trefethen, 36; in the household of
Saml. A. Neal, 59, a wood dealer with $1,500 real estate and $150 personal estate; and
Caroline Neal, 58;
living at Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire.¹
About 1866, Martha Elizabeth Neal moved to Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, from Dover.²
Martha died on April 21, 1901 in 319 Lake avenue, Manchester, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, at age 77 of gastric enteritis, three months duration.²
She was buried on April 25, 1901 in Pine Hill Cemetery, Dover, Strafford County, New Hampshire.²
