Robert Burns Woodward

b. April 10, 1917, d. July 8, 1979

  • D.O.T.
  • A biography of Robert Burns Woodward may be found at http://www.nobel.se/chemistry/laureates/1965/woodward-bio.html.
  • .

  • D.O.T.
  • Robert Burns Woodward was born on April 10, 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts.1
Arthur, Margaret and Robert Burns Woodward
  • He was the son of Arthur Chester Woodward and Margaret A. Burns.
  • The census of 1930 shows: Margaret W. Chase, 49; and Robert Woodward, son, 12;
living at 170 Holbrook, Quincy, Massachusetts.
They were living with Margaret's husband, Wallace H. Chase, 54, machinist at a machine shop. They owned their home, valued at $10,000.2

  • At the time of his high school graduation, his knowledge of chemical reactions surpassed that of many college professors. He enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at age 16.
  • At age 20, he received both his Bachelor's and Doctorate degrees.
  • Robert married Irja Pullman on July 30, 1938 in Saint Albans, Franklin County, Vermont. He was a chemist, living at 170 Holbrook Rd., Quincy, Mass. She lived at 30 Copeland St., Quincy, Mass.3
  • The census of 1940 shows: Robert Woodward, 23, a chemist; and Irja Woodward, wife, 25; listed with Siiri Anne Woodward
living at 5 Chauncy Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Also living there were two boarders: Donald Davidson, 23; and Edith Tilllis, 23. They rented the home for $27.50.4

  • He received 24 honorary doctorates between 1945 and 1976 from seven nations. He authored or co-authored over 200 articles. A synopsis of his major accomplishments and a bibliography of his works may be found in 'Tetrahedron Letters' of Sept. 1979 (#38), the journal he founded jointly with Sir Robert Robinson.
  • Robert Burns Woodward and Irja Pullman were divorced in 1946.5
  • Robert Burns Woodward married Eudoxia Belmont Muller as his second wife.
  • On June 16, 1951, Robert Woodward and Eudoxia Woodward embarked from Havre, France, on the "Mauretania."6
  • Arrived at New York, New York County, New York, on June 22, 1951.6
  • On August 15, 1955, Robert Burns Woodward and Eudoxia Woodward embarked from Naples, Italy, on the "Cristofero Colombo."7
  • Arrived at New York, New York County, New York, on August 23, 1955.7
  • His hallmark was his plain, light blue tie; he carried the same color over to his office and usually his car. He was an accomplished raconteur, enjoyed betting on any and all topics with such precision and care that he rarely lost, and was an inveterate smoker. According to P.D. Bartlett and F.H. ('Science' 150:585-7), he "scorns exercise, to which he attributes many of the troubles of others," although an article in 'Newsweek' (23 June 1947) reports "A sandy haired man of average height, he plays baseball with students (who call him 'Bob')," and R.L. Demmerle ('Chem. & Eng. News' 25:2137+) states that "if he is not [at his home, office, or in the lab], it's a cinch he'll be at Harvard's Soldier's Field in the midst of a faculty game of softball or touch football completely oblivious to the problems of `tough molecules,'" and a 1937 news clipping reports that he played tennis and swam.
  • Robert Burns Woodward was considered to be the greatest organic chemist of modern times, and was awarded the 1965 Nobel Prize for chemistry. He developed the total syntheses of quinine, patulin, cholesterol, cortisone, lanosterol, strychnine, lysergic acid, reserpine, chlorophyll, colchicine, cephalosporin-C, vitamin B-12, and prostaglandin F-2a. He liked to say that his synthesis of quinine was planned when he was 12 years old.
  • Robert died on July 8, 1979 in at his home, Cambridge, Massachusetts, at age 62 of a heart attack.

Dr. D.C. Neckers, chairman of the Dept. of Chemistry at Bowling Green State University, eulogized, "Dr. Woodward's untimely death is tragic for American science. As with the deaths of all great persons, mankind will never replace his intellect and vigor. He was the Bach -- the Picasso -- the Shakespeare -- of his science. He did what he did better than anyone else ever has and likely better than succeeding generations ever will."
