William Erastus Gibbs D.D.1

  • William Erastus Gibbs D.D. was born on January 22, 1837 in Albany, Albany County, New York.1
  • He was the son of Samuel W. Gibbs and Harriet Hinckley.1
  • The census of 1850 shows:
    William Gibbs, 13, attending school; in the household of
    John W. Gibbs, 38, a patternmaker with $2500 real estate; and
    Harriet Gibbs, 35;
    living at Albany, Albany County, New York.2

  • The census of 1855 shows:
    William Erastus Gibbs D.D. in the household of
    Samuel W. Gibbs and
    Harriet Hinckley
    living at Albany, Albany County, New York.3

  • William died on December 1, 1909 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, at age 72. His preparation for the ministry was secured at Tufts College, from which he graduated in 1859, and through a post-graduate course under Rev. C. H. Leonard. He was ordained Nov. 22, 1860, at Arlington, Mass. In 1862 he responded to the call for volunteers and enlisted and served as a private in the Civil War. On his discharge, he again took up the work of the ministry and continued in it through his life, occupying pastorates at Newark, N. J., Portland, Me., Buffalo, N. Y., and Lawrence, Mass., serving in the last place for twenty one years. He was a member of the G. A. R., the Masons, had served on the Board of Trustees of our General Convention, as President of the Massachusetts State Convention, and continued as a Trustee of Tufts College until his death. In addition to these opportunities for service, Dr. Gibbs was always a vital force in the community in which he lived, being a leader in all social, civic and educational enterprises. He was a man of great intellectual power and as a minister he made a large contribution to the success of our Church and the cause of Christianity.1
