Henry Luther Houghton

  • Henry Luther Houghton was born on April 20, 1841 in Waterford, Oxford County, Maine.1,2,3
  • He was the son of Capt. Luther Houghton and Ruth P. Jewett.
  • The census of 1850 shows:
    Henry L. Houghton, 9, attending school; in the household of
    Luther Houghton, 41, a landlord with $1200 real estate; and
    Mary Houghton, 47;
    living at Waterford, Oxford County, Maine.4

  • He lived with his father till he was twenty-one years of age, and was educated in the common schools. In 1862 he went to Boston to learn the baker's trade, but stayed only three months enlisted in the Sixth Massachusetts regiment, a nine months' organization, raised in Lowell. He served his term of enlistment and returned to Waterford, where he was drafted, but did not go into the service. He was again drafted at the next conscription, and that time sent a substitute.
  • Henry married Harriet Elizabeth Hale, daughter of Oliver Hale Jr. and Harriet Waite, on September 3, 1863 in Waterford, Oxford County, Maine. They were second cousins once removed.
  • About 1865 he became a clerk of William Deering in Portland, who at that time was manufacturing cloth for the government to make into soldiers' uniforms.
  • After leaving that place he was a clerk for the Eatern Express Company, in the fall of 1866 became a teamster for Haines & Smith.
  • Henry Luther Houghton lived at Bowdoin Street, Portland, Cumberland County, Maine.
  • The census of 1880 shows: Henry L. Houghton, a hardware dealer; and Harriet E. Houghton listed with Annie P. Houghton
    living at Portland, Cumberland County, Maine.
    They had a servant, Ella M. Billings, 23.5

  • The census of 1900 shows: Henry L. Houghton, age 41, a hardware merchant;
    living at Portland, Cumberland County, Maine.6

  • Henry died on April 20, 1901 at age 60 He was buried at sea two days out from Jamaica.2,7
