Robert Hooper known as "King Hooper"1

b. June 26, 1709, d. 1790
  • Robert Hooper known as "King Hooper" was born on June 26, 1709.
  • Robert married Ruth Swett, daughter of Joseph Swett Jr. and Ruth (?), on September 10, 1735.2
  • Perhaps the richest merchant of his time in New England and a picturesque figure. He was called "King" not only on account of the power which he wielded as a great merchant who lived in splendid style, but also on account of his absolute honesty, fairness, and even liberality to the poor fishermen with whom he dealt. He lost the confidence of his townsmen, however, when called upon to choose between King and country.3
  • Robert died in 1790.
