• Rev. Joseph Lord of Dorchester was born on June 30, 1672, son of Thomas and Alice (Rand) Lord, of Charlestown.²
• He was graduated in 1691 from Harvard College. From 1692 till 1695, probably, he taught the school in Dorchester, Massachusetts. In the full of '95, a church was gathered in Dorchester, with the design of removing to South Carolina, and Mr. Lord was ordained pastor. They arrived at their place of destination, on the Ashley river, about 18 miles from Charleston, Dec. 20th, and called the place Dorchester.²
  
• Joseph married Abigail Hinckley, daughter of Gov. Thomas Hinckley and Mary Smith, on January 2, 1697/98, as his first wife. "When Mr. Lord settled here his family consisted of his wife and seven children, all of whom were born in South Carolina. Madam Lord was well fitted to fill the high position, which the ministers wife was then excepted to hold. Beautiful, intellectual, devout, well reared, she fully met the requirements excepted of a daughter of Gov. Hinckley. Her influence on the life of the town was, however, of a comparatively brief duration. She passed away on the night of December 14, 1725, age 56 years, and nearly twenty years thereafter her husband cherished her memory by leading a single life."
  
  He remained with his society in South Carolina upwards of twenty years, when he returned to Massachusetts. On the 15th of June, 1720, Mr. Lord was installed pastor of the church in Chatham.^2,3,4,5
• Joseph married on November 16, 1743 to Bethia Smith, as his second wife.⁵
• Joseph died on June 6, 1748 at age 75, after preaching in Chatham twenty-eight years.^2,4
