Hon. John Prentice1

b. October 7, 1744, d. May 18, 1808

  • Hon. John Prentice was baptized on October 7, 1744 in Cambridge, Massachusetts.3
  • He was the son of Henry Prentice 3d and Susanna Brown.2
  • To help pay his expenses in college, his mother swept the college buildings.4
  • Hon. John Prentice was graduated in 1766 from Harvard University.5
  • He read law with Hon. Samuel Livermore, of Londonderry, and commenced practice there in 1770. He bought Mr. Livermore's farm and erected a good house. He was attorney-general from 1787 to '93, a representative for thirteen years, and speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives from 1794 to '95, and 1798 to 1803. He was appointed judge of the Supreme Court, but declined. He was a subscriber to the declaration made at Londonderry in 1776 to oppose Great Britain 'vi et armis,' the original being in the library of the N.E.G.H.S., Boston.1
  • John married Ruth Lemmon, daughter of Dr. Joseph Lemmon and Hannah Swett, on January 11, 1770 in Marblehead, Massachusetts.6
  • As of 1772, Hon. John Prentice lived at Londonderry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire.5
  • He was an addressor of Gov. Hutchinson when Hutchinson left for England. Lincoln's 'History of Worcester' has this from a print of the time: 'Marblehead, Oct. 24, 1774. Whereas, I, the subscriber, signed an address to the late Gov'r Hutchinson, I wish the Devil had had said address before I had seen it. S'd, John Prentice.' He was afterwards a good patriot.1
  • Between 1787 and 1793, he was attorney-general.5
  • John married Tabitha Sargent on March 6, 1793 in Haverhill, Massachusetts, as his second wife, and her second husband.7
  • Between 1794 and 1795, he was Speaker of the House.5
  • In 1798, he was appointed Judge of the Superior Court, but declined the appointment.5
  • Between 1798 and 1803, Hon. John Prentice was Speaker of the House.5
  • John died on May 18, 1808 in Londonderry, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, at age 63.5
