Seth Ingersoll Browne1

  • Seth Ingersoll Browne was baptized on July 8, 1750. Seth Brown was 23 when he participated in the Boston Tea Party. He was a house carpenter by trade and post-war he ran a tavern, a riding school, and stable. Seth Brown enlisted in the Revolutionary Army as a minuteman, a non-commissioned officer, and militiaman. He was one of the men who rolled barrels of gunpowder down Bunker Hill to deceive the British into believing the Patriots still had ample gunpowder. When his company’s commander, Major Andrew McClary, was wounded, Browne took command and led the patriot’s retreat across Mystic River. He was also one of several men hand picked to transport the money sent by General Lafayette to General Washington through Newport, Rhode Island, to White Plains, New York.2,3
  • He was the son of Lieut. William Brown and Mary Bayley.1
  • Seth married Lucy Brown on July 7, 1774 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as his first wife, by the Rev. Nathan Appleton.4
  • Seth married Sarah Goddin on October 5, 1786, as his second wife. They were married by Rev. T. Hilliard.1,5
  • Seth died on March 9, 1809 in Bow Street, Charlestown, Massachusetts, at age 58.5
  • He was buried in Granary Burying Ground, Boston, Massachusetts.5
