James Royce

b. July 1, 1744, d. June 6, 1767
  • Reference: 0400l
  • James Royce was baptized on July 1, 1744 in Wallingford, Connecticut.1
  • He was the son of Nathaniel Royce and Phebe Clark.1
  • James Royce was burned to death on June 6, 1767 in Goshen, Connecticut, at age 22. He never married. James was living with his brother, Clark, in the Blue House, so called because of its lead color. The house was struck by lightning in four or five places and burned. Clark's wife, Susannah, was home but not killed. Rhoda Hinman was also present. James was a Cabinetmaker and had a work space in the attic of the house from which he did come down stairs during the storm.1

Jerusha Royce

b. after May 27, 1762
  • Jerusha Royce was probably born after May 27, 1762. There is much confusion over the identity and birth year of Jerusha Royce. Some sources give her birth year as 1756. Given that "Jerusha" was the name of Robert's second wife, and they didn't marry until 1762, this seems unlikely. Other sources say she was born about 1776, which would make a 1781 marriage impossible. I am unable to access the original source for any of this information.
  • She was the daughter of Robert Royce and Jerusha Parker.1
  • Jerusha married Elisha Street on June 26, 1781 in the Congregational Society, Cheshire, Connecticut.2
  • Jerusha married Joel Ives on October 29, 1804 in Cheshire, Connecticut.2
