Lydia White1
b. July 2, 1738, d. November 14, 1791
- Lydia White was born on July 2, 1738 in what was then known as Haverhill, Mass. She was the daughter of Nicholas White, Esq. of Plaistow.2
- Lydia married Benjamin Hale, son of Thomas Hale and Mary Smith, on December 9, 1762.1
- After her husband Benjamin's death, Lydia remained with her children Nicholas, Lydia and Hannah in Atkinson till the fall of 1789, when, on the invitation of her bachelor brother, Dr. Samuel White of Newbury, Vt., they all removed to his house and found a home with him. Her eldest son Joshua had, a year or two before, established himself in the new town of Corinth, a few miles from Newbury. Here she spent the brief remainder of her life and died in the house of her brother only about two years after removing there.3
- Lydia White moved to Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, in 1789 or 1790 with Joshua Hale and Nicholas Hale.4
- Lydia died on November 14, 1791 in Newbury, Orange County, Vermont, at age 53 She was a woman of rare excellencies, of sweet and gentle disposition combined with great firmness and energy of character. Her three children who went with her to Newbury followed their brother Joshua about two years after her death, where they all settled and lived and died.5
