b. August 14, 1871, d. May 29, 1932
  • Reference: 0052aca
  • THIS LISTING HAS NOT YET BEEN AUDITED, AND MAY NOT BE ACCURATE; A.
  • William H. Garland was born on August 14, 1871 in Saint Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.2,1
  • He was the son of James Smith Garland and Kate Agnes Howard.1
  • The census of November 17, 1880 shows:
    Wm. Garland, son, 8; in the household of
    James Garland, 37, a lawyer; and
    Maria Howard, wife, 33, keeping house;
    living at Saint Louis, St. Louis County, Missouri.3

  • William Howard Garland was educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, and had a private tutor at Concord, Mass.

    In Harvard College, 1890-94; Law School, 1896-97. Degree: A.B. 1894.4
  • From 1897 to 1901, William Howard Garland was secretary to Senator George F. Hoar, and in the latter year was appointed assistant United States attorney at Boston. In September, 1910, he left Concord, which had been his home for nearly twenty-five years, to live in Allston.4
  • As of 1909, William Howard Garland lived at 10 Wood Street, Concord, Merrimack County, New Hampshire, and was an attorney at law.1
  • William married Ruth Eulalia Fletcher on October 29, 1909 in Boston, Massachusetts. They were married by John Hopkins Denison, of Central Congregational Church.1

  • Arrived at New York, New York County, New York, in September, 1913.2
  • January, 1914, he resigned as Assistant United States Attorney and afterwards engaged only in private practice — mostly in the trial of cases. He writes: "This is to me the most interesting of all legal work, and it generally satisfies the combative instinct without bloodshed. But I must admit that I deeply regretted my inability to take a fighting part in the Great War instead of helping to send other men to do it for me. I served as associate member of the Legal Advisory Board of the City of Boston from December, 1917, until the cessation of registration under the Selective Service Law shortly before the armistice. I also served as district inspector of the American Protective League for the Brighton-Allston District from its organization until it was dissolved last February. The saddest day I have known was December 24, 1918, when my little daughter Frances died of influenza-pneumonia. The brightest day that I can see in the future is that of the '94 Reunion.

    "In conclusion, I wish to say that although my experience of the past twenty-five years has chastened, it has not discouraged me. I remain an invincible optimist. I hope that if Rand calls on me for another autobiography for our fiftieth anniversary, I shall have something better and more interesting to report."4
  • The census of 1920 shows: William H. Garland, 48, an attornet; and Ruth F. Garland, wife, 30, housewife; listed with Williiam H. Garland and Robbin Garland
