b. October 13, 1800
  • Thomas Hale was born on October 13, 1800.1
  • He was the son of Thomas Hale and Alice Little.1
  • His great-great uncle Oliver said he was the best representative of the sixth generation of Thomas Hale's that he had seen. He learned his father's business, and in 1821 opened a store in Portsmouth, N. H., where he continued six years. In 1827 he made a voyage in the brig America, and the following year became her captain. In 1836 he was chosen president of the Merchants' Insurance Company of New York, and a few years later, on the decision of the officers to close up the business, in order to make a change in the system of insurance, he was appointed sole receiver. Declining the request of his friends to reorganize the company upon the mutual plan, he became vice-president of the Alliance Insurance Company. In 1851 he accepted the vice-presidency of the Atlantic Insurance Company of New York, a position he held till his death 28 May 1854. Conscientious in the discharge of duty, he merited and enjoyed the confidence of those with whom he was associated in business relations, while his gentleness and kindness of heart made him universally beloved. He was a deacon of Plymouth Church, Brooklyn, and active in the seamen's cause, being connected with the Sailors' Snug Harbor and Bethel. He was also interested in other charities.1
  • Thomas married Caroline Charlotte Jordan on October 3, 1836.1
