- He was the son of Nathan Hale and Abigail Grout.2
- Nathan married Eunice Raymond on August 14, 1793 in Rindge, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.3
- In 1797, Capt. Nathan Hale moved to Windsor, Windsor County, Vermont, where he was a merchant at the "Street" so called. About the year 1800 he was joined by his brother Harry, who became his partner, and the business was carried on under the firm of N. & H. Hale. After a year or two they opened a second store in the West Parish of Windsor, which was taken specially in charge by Harry, Nathan remaining at the Street, but the partnership continuing in both stores.3
- He and Ruth Tyler published their marriage intention on September 6, 1799 in Warren, Massachusetts.4
- About 1800, Capt. Nathan Hale moved to Chelsea, Orange County, Vermont, where he was followed in 1807 by Harry, and business renewed there as merchants and millers under the old firm of N. & H. Hale. Later, the firm was dissolved and Nathan Hale retired both from the mercantile and milling business. He had learned the trade of clock-making, and after going out of partnership with his brother pursued that trade to a greater or lesser extent for much of the remainder of his life, and also for many years kept an inn. Mr. Hale suffered for much of his life from deafness, which became very marked before he had passed middle age, and to a large extent disqualied him from active business. He was early elected a captain of militia, and his brother Harry afterward succeeding to the same rank, they were commonly known to and among their neighbors as "Capt. Nathan" and "Capt. Harry." He was a man always of most decided political opinions, an early Federalist and afterward a Whig, an active Mason, but was never prominent in public life, his deafness disqualifying him. He was a man of sound judgment, of the firmest and most scrupulous integrity, and greatly respected by the community in which he dwelt.5
- Nathan married Sarah Caldwell Black of Barre, Mass. on February 2, 1806.3
- Mr. Hale made no public profession of religion till his old age, when he joined the Congregational Church in Chelsea, but he was always a liberal supporter of that church, with which he habitually worshipped, and in all his life manifested the true traits of real Christianity. When, about 1810, the building of a Congregational house of worship was agitated, a controversy arose as to its proposed site and perhaps some other matters, and it looked as if the scheme was to be abandoned. The difficulty was solved by Mr. Hale and his brother Harry who, with the aid of another citizen, Mr. Rufus Lathrop, quietly took the burden upon their own shoulders and assumed the building with all its expense and liability, neither of the three being a member of the church. They reimbursed themselves to a considerable extent by the sale of pews, but each of the three remained largely in advance of their fair proportion of expenditure to the end of their lives.6
- Nathan died on January 9, 1849 in Chelsea, Orange County, Vermont, at age 77. He was a man of handsome estate.7
