Isaac Hale¹

• Isaac Hale was born on October 5, 1761 in Newbury, Massachusetts.¹
• He was the son of Joshua Hale and Hannah Pemberton.¹
• Isaac Hale moved to Goffstown, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, in 1777 with Joshua Hale and Hannah Pemberton.²
• In Dec 1777, after death of his father, John Patter was appointed guardian of him and his brother Nathan by the Probate Court of Merrimack county, N. H. He returned young to Newbury, where he lived at the "Old town" most of his life in the house next north of Parker River bridge.²
• Isaac Hale moved to Boxford, Massachusetts, in 1777 with Hannah Pemberton.³
• Isaac married Ruth Jewett on May 4, 1785 in Rowley, Massachusetts, by Rev. Ebenezer Bradford.²
• In Mar 1786, he bought about 3 acres of land in Newbury of Nathaniel Adams. (Essex Rec 146 : 96.) In 1787 bought of Jonathan Plumer, Jr., 2 acres more there (147 :58); also in 1788 two small parcels of Benjamin Willett (149 : 83.)⁴
• Isaac Hale was a shoemaker and farmer, and was also concerned in connection with Mr. William Dole in the cod-fishery till broken up by the war of 1812.²
• Isaac died on July 4, 1819 in Newbury, Massachusetts, at age 57 of apoplexy or paralysis. Letters of administration on his estate were granted by the Essex Probate Court 7 Sept 1819, to Samuel Newman, cordwainer, of Newburyport. His estate was small, and $125, nearly all the personalty, was assigned to the widow for the support of herself and minor children. He was a citizen much respected for his integrity and probity.²
• He was buried in Newbury Neck, Massachusetts, in the cemetery where his grandfather Joshua was the first person buried.²

  Frances E. Hale, wife, 38, keeping house;
  living at Lee, Penobscot County, Maine.¹
  
  
• Isabell married Leander Tuck on September 16, 1893 in Lee, Maine. He was a laborer. She was a dressmaker.⁴
• Isabell died in 1926.⁵

Israel Hale¹

• Israel Hale was born on June 12, 1759 in Harvard, Massachusetts.¹
• He was the son of Corporal Benjamin Hale and Mary Taylor.¹
• The History of Waterford states that he served through the whole Revolutionary war.²
• Israel married Esther Taylor, daughter of Charles Taylor and Mercy Stearns, on November 12, 1782 in Harvard, Massachusetts, performed by Josiah Whitney, Esq.³
  
• In 1795, Israel Hale moved to what was afterward Waterford, Oxford County, Maine, and settled in the west part of the town, where Capt. Thomas Swan was living in 1879. He was one of the petitioners for its incorporation as a town in that year. On the incorporation of the town in 1797 his name appears on the first list of taxpayers, and he was elected "hog-constable" at the first town meeting in 1797.^2,4
• 1810, Israel Hale attended the first Methodist class formed in Waterford. Josiah Shaw was its leader. Also in the class were Peter and Mary Gerry, and Oliver Haskell. For several years, they met at Shaw's house in the winter, and his barn in the summer.⁵
• The census of 1820 shows: Israel Hale and Esther Taylor listed with Eber Hale
  living at Waterford, Oxford County, Maine.
  Also in the household were one free white male between sixteen and eighteen [Eber], and one free white female of ten and under sixteen [unknown]. The family had three persons engaged in agriculture.⁶
  
  
• "At a District Court of the United States begun and holden at Portland within the District of Maine, on the first Tuesday, being the ninth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty, before the Honorable ALBION K. PARRIS, judge of said Court. ON the sixth day of June in the year above written, personally appeared in open Court, the same having "the power of fine and imprisonment" and being a Court of Record for said Maine District, Israel Hale, aged sixty one years, resident in Waterford in said District, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath declare that he served in the Revolutionary War as a Private in the company commanded by Capt. Benj. Brown in the Regiment commanded by Colonel Michael Jackson in the line of the State of Massachusetts on the Continental Establishment, as is more particularly mentioned and described in his original declaration, made on the seventh day of April, A.D. 1818, and on which said declaration his Certificate of Pension numbered 7990 was granted. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818; and that I have not since that time by gift, sale, or in any manner disposed of my properety, or any part thereof, with the intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provisions of an Act of Congress, entitled "An Act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States, in the Revolutionary War," passed on the 18th day of March 1818 : and that I have not, nor has any person in trust for me, any propertiy or securities, contracts, or debts due to me; nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed, and by me subscribed; that my occupation and ability to pursue the same, together with the number and other particulars of my family, are in fact and in truth as is particularly described on the back hereof, also subscribed by me.

  On this 6th day of August, A.D. 1832, personally appeared in open Court, before the Court of Probate now sitting, Israel Hale, a resident of Waterford, in the county of Oxford and State of Maine, aged 73 years, who being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on his oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June 7, 1832. That he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated. On or about the first day of April 1777, at Harvard in the County of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, he enlisted for a term of three years in the Continental line of the Revolutionary army under Capt. Benjamin Brown of the eighth Massachusetts Regiment commanded by Col. Michael Jackson. He went immediately to Concord in said Massachusetts to pass muster and draw arms. About a fortnight afterwards, he rendezvoused at Cambridge, Mass., and in about another fortnight, marched to Albany in the State of New York. After that, his company was stationed at Stillwater till Gen. Burgoyne went up to Saratoga. At this time, Col. John Brock had command of the 8th Massachusetts Regiment in which he was. He was at the Battle of Stillwater on the 7th of October 1777, and was also present on the 17th of the same month at the surrender of Gen. Burgoyne's army. The night after this surrender, the Company in which he was started for Albany by a forced march where they arrived the next day. He immediately went down the North River to Fishkill, where he was sick about three months with the small pox. In March 1778, he was ordered to Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. There he stayed till the British forces evacuated Philadelphia. He was in the Main army under Washington when it met the British at Monmouth and was in the Battle at that place on the 8th of June, he believes 1778. After the battle of Monmouth, he was ordered and repaired with the Company to White Plains. There he stayed till the next fall when his division of the army had orders to march to Hartford in the State of Connecticut. After remaining there about a week, he had orders to march back to Fishkill. From thence, his Regiment marched to Poughkeepskie on to Winter Quarters. In the spring of 1779, he marched to West Point where he served out the remaining part of his term of enlistment during the months of which he was on of Genl. McDougal's Life Guard. He received an honorable discharge at the expiration of his term of service, which he now supposed is in the war office at Washington. He served under other and different intestments during the war of the Revolution, but thinks it unnecessary to particularise them.
  
  He further states that he has once been on the pension roll under the act of March 18, 1818, and has been dropped therefrom on account of his property, and that his place of residence when he first made application was and still [is] in Waterford aform'ed. His original Pension certificate he has lost."⁸
