Abby Laura Hale1

b. 1850 or 1851, d. April 29, 1888
  • Abby Laura Hale was born in 1850 or 1851 in New Hampshire.2
  • She was the daughter of Robert Safford Hale and Lovina Sibley Stone.1
  • The census of 1880 shows:
    Abby L. Hale, daughter, 29, at home; in the household of
    Robert S. Hale, 57, a lawyer; and
    Lovina Hale, wife, 53, keeping house;
    living at Elizabethtown, Essex County, New York.2

  • Abby died on April 29, 1888 The following notice was published in the Elizabethtown (N. Y.) Post:

    In this village, on Sunday, the 29th day of April, 1888, Abby Laura Hale, eldest daughter of the late Hon. Robert S. Hale, departed this life.

    The position which this lady held in the social and religious life of our village, grants us the privilege of speaking frank, true words of eulogy.

    Her dignity of carriage and full stature, illummed eye and speaking face gave her a presence so impressive as to he fitly termed majestic, but softened by a very atmosphere of modesty into true woman1y sweetness.

    In intellectual endowment she was of rare and peculiar excellence. From natural gifts, aided and perfected by conscientious study, wide and wise reading and extensive trave1,there resulted not only extraprdinary intelligence and mental power, but also and in the highest degree true refinement--that admirable union of delicacy and strength, so characteristic of her.

    Far better than all this were the depth and richness of her spiritual nature, so elevated, so purifed, so sweetened by profoundly earnest study of the truth. by communion with the Divine nature, bringing her life into harmony with the Holy Will, that she had become

    That a great loss has been suffered by this community in her death, we all realize too well. From her the young received instruction, the poor, relief, the suffering, sympathy. Her cheerful and effective aid was freely given to every good work, her wise counsel was valued in every emergency, her steadfast devotion to duty was rested upon as an always sure reliance.

    But we are not wholly without consolation. We have her example, the inspiration of ber pure life, her good works. This grand spirit, its development completed and its discipline finished, has gone to nobler activities and greater usefulness in the life beyond. Truly, for such an one
