• George Silsbee Hale was born on September 24, 1825 in Keene, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.¹
• He was the son of Salma Hale and Sarah Kellogg King.¹
• George Silsbee Hale was educated at Keene, Walpole, Concord, N. H., and the Phillips Exeter Academy; graduated at Harvard College (A. B 1844, A. M., honoris causa, Dartmouth Coll 1885); studied at Cambridge Law School; taught in a large school for girls at Richmond, Va. for some time, and, after a year abroad, including a pedestrian tour, in 1849, from Sorrento in Italy to Basle in Switzerland, entered the Suffolk bar in Boston in 1850, and engaged therein the practice of the law. He was, in 1857, 1863 and 1864,a member of the common council of that city, and for the last two years president of that body; was president of the board of trustees of Phillips Exeter Academy ; was for some seventeen years a trustee of the Massachusetts General Hospital; for some time a trustee of the Massachusetts Asylum for the Blind, and an overseer of the poor of Boston, and afterwards chairman of a commission on the treatment of the poor, whose report to the city government contains much information and discussion on that subject; was also a member of the American, Massachusetts and New Hampshire Historical, and the New England Historical Genealogical Societies, of the American Social Science and Statistical Association and president of the American Unitarian Association.
  
  He edited, in connection, at one time, with Geo. P. Sanger and later with John Codman, the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth volumes of the Boston Law Reporter, was the sole editor of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth volumes of the United States Digest and of the nineteenth with H. Farnam Smith. Besides other publications, the London Law Magazine for February, 1864, has an article by him on "American Secession and State Rights;" the American Law Review for Jul 1867, one on "The Origin and History of 'Seals'" as a mode of authenticating documents, with some curious and interesting information on that subject. He has written memoirs of Joel Parker, some time Chief Justice of New Hampshire, of Theron Metcalf of the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts, and the recent Memorial History of Boston contains an historical sketch by him of "The Charities of Boston."²

An additional conveyance of quit claim was from John, Josiah and Charles Wood of Lovell, by deed dated 6 Jul 1853. The land was mortgaged on 23 Jul 1853 for $106 received from Jacob Hazen of Bridgton.⁶

That year, he produced 12 bushels of wheat, 25 of Indian corn, 10 of oats, 5 of peas and beans, 50 of Irish potatoes, 120 lbs of butter, and 20 tons of hay.^7,8
  
  
  
• On July 29, 1851, George Washington Hale bought land in the north half of lot no. 37 in the 3rd division, Sweden, Oxford County, Maine. George W. Hale, yeoman, of Sweden paid $200 to John Hazeltine of Sweden, yeoman, for 50 acres of land and buildings thereon, reserving all the hemlock timber standing and laying on same for one year. The following day, he mortgaged it, receiving $51.23 from Thomas Trull of Sweden, yeoman. He sold this land on 27 Apr 1852 to Sally Hale, wife of Charles Hale of Waterford, yeoman, for $500.^9,10
• On May 31, 1854, George Washington Hale and Clara Adeline Neal sold real estate in Waterford and Sweden, Oxford County, Maine. Elbridge Gerry, of Portland, paid $400 to George W. and Clara A. Hale of Waterford, for a farm in Waterford and Sweden, the same farm formerly occupied by Charles Hale known as the "Shepard Opening," a woodlot estimated to contain 130 acres. Also the Houghton parcel of land estimated to contain 60 acres. Also a parcel of land known as the Atherton parcel.¹¹

• "Artemus [Ward] had a had a tolerant mind. One of Waterford's characters was Washington Hale, who once kept a hotel frequented by doubtful characters and after A. W.'s time was known to have harbored Langdon W. Moore, a noted cracksman, preparatory to robbing the savings-bank in Norway. 'Upon mature deliberation,' said Artemus, 'I have decided to call him 'honest old Wash.' In view of the fact that he has been twice in the penitentiary and ought to be kept there all the time, it seems to me this is as complimentary as the occasion requires.²⁰'"
• On December 14, 1870, the Bangor Daily Whig & Courier reported "The Lewiston Journal learns that the Lake Hotel at Waterford, owned and occupied by Geo. W. Hale, was burned, Monday morning, about 5 oclock. The fire extended to the house of Mr. Geo. Kimball, adjoining, which was also destroyed. It is understood that the Lake Hotel was insured, but we do not learn either the amount of the loss or the insurance. Mr. Kimball was insured for $500, which will cover but a small portion of his loss."²¹
