Salma Hale¹

• Salma Hale was born on March 7, 1787 in Alstead, Cheshire County, New Hampshire.¹
• He was the son of David Hale and Hannah Emerson.¹
• Salma Hale was a printer, editor, politician, historian and lawyer. At thirteen he was apprenticed to a printer in Walpole, N. H; at seventeen wrote an English grammar, first published (in 1804) by Thomas & Thomas at Worcester, Mass., which was afterward rewritten and republished in 1831 in New York (Collins & Hannay) under the title "A New Grammar of the English Language." At eighteen he became the editor of the Political Observer, an influential Republican newspaper printed at Walpole, N. H. He studied law, became clerk of the Court of Common Pleas for Cheshire county and moved to Keene, the shire town in 1813. In 1817 he became, and, until 1831, when he was admitted to the bar, remained clerk of the Supreme Judicial Court, or of its successor, "The Superior Court of Judicature. In 1816 he was elected to the Fifteenth Congress on a general ticket as a Republican, by a larger number of votes than any other member, but declined a re-election. He devoted himself to study and to the preparation of a History of the United States to which a prize of $400 and a gold medal, offered by the American Academy of Belles Lettres of New York, "for the best written History of the United States which * * * shall contain a suitable exposition of the situation, character and interests, absolute and relative of the American Republic, calculated for a class book in academies and schools" was awarded."
  
  "It was his purpose," he said, in the preface, * * "to produce, not so much by moral reflection, as by the tenor of the narrative, virtuous and patriotic impressions on the mind of the reader." This work was first published in 1821 at Keene under the title of "The History of the United States of America from their First Settlement as Colonies to the Close of the War with Great Britain in 1815," with the motto from Sallust, "Civitas incredibile memoratu est, adeptu libertate, quantum, brevi, creverit."
  
  Numerous editions followed for many successive years. It was also continued to 1817 and 1845, published by different publishers in the United States. Prentiss, Keene, 1821, 1823, etc; Collins & Hannay, New York, 1827; Harper & Bros., New York, 1840, 1841, 1845, 1857; H. & E. Phinney, Cooperstown, N.Y 1846; Miller, London, Eng 1826, 1827, 1836; W. Brittain, London, Eng 1848; Geo. Clark & Son, Aberdeen, Scotland, 1848, and became widely read and largely used throughout the country as a school book, 25,000 copies per annum being published in some years. It was a work of great literary merit and accuracy and careful statement. Few single volumes have done so much to educate the youth of this country and to implant a love of knowledge and its early history and of the principles of free government.
  
  In an address by Gov. Charles H. Bell, before the New Hampshire Historical Society, on its Fiftieth Anniversary, he speaks of "Salma Hale, an accomplished writer and scholar and a pioneer in one department of school literature," and adds, "His History of the United States was truly an educational classic and long retained its estimation with the successive generations of the young, and more singular still, was repeatedly republished abroad."
  
  In an oration on the character of Washington, delivered by Mr, Hale, 1832 (Geo. Tilden, Keene, 1832), occurs the following expression of the thought, now immortal in the briefer phrase of Abraham Lincoln: "We have political institutions, formed and fashioned by the people, for the good of the people, subject jto be changed by the people at their volition and theirs alone."
  
  Mr. Hale was a trustee of "Dartmouth University " (1816) under the act which led to the famous "Dartmouth College Case," also of the University of Vermont (1823), and received honorary degrees from both (Univ. of Vt 1824; D. C 1849). He held the office of secretary of the commissioners under the fifth article of the treaty of Ghent for determining the northeastern boundary line; was president of the New Hampshire Historical Society (1830); a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives (1828, 1844), and of the Senate (1824, 1845). He was a man of wide reading and va1ied interests in literary, social, philanthropic and public subjects, a contributor to newspapers and periodicals, instrumental in organizing the first agricultural society in New Hampshire, the second in New England, and took an early and active interest in promoting temperance, education and the abolition of slavery, and in the Unitarian movement. While in Congress he opposed the Missouri compromise and lived to see the political and religious theories and reforms, which he advocated when they were unpopular, accepted and powerful in the nation.
