b. October 2, 1722, d. March 2, 1786
- Father: Richard Hale1 b. November 9, 1690, d. between February 22, 1771 and July 29, 1771
- Mother: Mary Silver1 b. June 5, 1692
- Relationship: 3rd cousin 7 times removed of Steven George Levine
- Samuel Hale was born on October 2, 1722 in Newbury, Massachusetts.2
- He was the son of Richard Hale and Mary Silver.1
- Samuel married Elizabeth Pettengill on April 18, 1745 in Newbury, Massachusetts.2
- On 8 Oct 1747, Samuel Hale, "cordwainer," and his brother Richard, Jr., blacksmith, both of Newbury, received from Nicholas Jackman of Newbury, carpenter, deed of dwelling-house (Hale house) in Newbury (Joppa since set into Newburyport), with about 43 rods of land (93: 109). He subsequently became sole owner, and as of 1889, the house had ever since been owned or occupied by his descendants. (Enoch Hale's MS 1855.) It was largely improved and added to by Samuel alone and with his brother Richard, and by Samuel's son Enoch.3
- On 26 Sept 1750, Samuel Hale, "fisherman," and brother Richard, Jr., blacksmith, both of Newbury, divided by deed 20 rods of land in Newbury with house (not Hale house) (95: 221).3
- On 29 Jun 1784, Samuel Hale of Newbury, "fisherman," conveyed to his son Enoch 5 rods and 12 feet of land in Newbury, bounded by Enoch, Jacob Hidden and Samuel, "the yard before the house to lie open for the use of both Samuel and Enoch" etc. (143: 38).3
- He was a brave, manly, patriotic, generous and intelligent man. He was called in early deeds "cordwainer," but was most of his life and at the time of his death an "open-boat fisherman," in the Merrimack and the adjacent waters of the Atlantic.
He drowned on Newbury bar (Merrimack river) 2 Mar 1786. He lost his life by his own bravery and generosity in attempting, in his open boat, to try the practicability of the bar in a very rough day, for a little fleet of fishing boats outside. A body believed, to be his was found soon after at Cape Ann, or near it, and buried there.
Nothing touching his estate is found in the Essex probate records.2
