- William Hale was born on August 19, 1764 in Newbury, Newtown (afterward West Newbury), Massachusetts.2
- He was the son of Capt. Oliver Hale and Judith Hale.1
- He studied medicine in Massachusetts, and was a teacher there. Emigrated to Virginia in or shortly before 1790, and settled in practice of medicine in Bedford county.2
- William married Sarah Quarles about 1791 in Bedford County, Virginia.2
- He lived in the practice of his profession for a few years after his marriage in Bedford county, where his two oldest children were born, and perhaps the next one or two. Then removed to Guilford county, N. C then back to Henry county, Va. In Mar 1812, he removed to Darlington District, S. C. where he spent the remainder of- his life, living first at Darlington C. H and after a few years on his farm a few miles from that village at a place called Society Hill.2
- Dr. Hale was a slave-owner and left a pretty numerous body of them. He provided for his children as they were married and settled in life, and by his will to his wife the use of a plantation of about 800 acres, with the slaves to cultivate it and a full stock, etc.
His son Samuel Q. says he was the most amiable of men, a kind husband, parent and master, and lived and died without an enemy. He was a consistent and active member of the Presbyterian Church, and always sustained the character of an upright, honorable and high-minded citizen and a skillful physician.3
