  • John Phillips, of Mobile Alabama, married Ann Jane Gardner, of Dorchester, on October 21, 1856 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, as his third wife, and her second husband. He was a merchant.2
  • The census of 1860 shows: John Phillips, 56, a gentleman, with $60,000 real estate and $20,000 personal estate; and Ann J. Phillips, 28;
    living at Dorchester, Massachusetts.
    Living with them were a couple from Nova Scotia: Joseph Wilson, 25, a laborer; and Ellen Wilson, 20, a cook; along with Hellena Wilson, 18, chambermaid.3

    "Phillips.—John, Dorchester, Oct. 22, 1863 a. 59 yrs. 6 mo.:—a descendant df Rev. George, the first minister of Watertown through Kev. Samuel'2 of Rowley—Samuel3 of Salem—Rev. The preservation in life of all these children is remarkable as this is the first death among them. At the decease of the father, more than half of them were confined by severe sickness, from which they were all restored to health ; and they all survived him more than forty-three years—the youngest being now fifty-seven years old. Mr. Phillips was a merchant in Boston of the firm of Vila, Phillips & Reynolds, and afterwards in New Orleans, and was also at one time Deputy Collector at Newburyport."4
  • He was buried in South Church Cemetery, Andover, Massachusetts.5
