Rev. Levi Frisbie¹

• Rev. Levi Frisbie was born on March 31, 1748 in Branford, Connecticut, son of Elisha and Rachel (Levi) Frisbie.¹
• He entered Yale College in 1767, and spent three years there,¹
  
• but graduated at Dartmouth College in 1771, in the first class graduated there, and his name, standing first in alphabetical order in his class, heads the list of graduates of that institution. He studied divinity with President Eleazer Wheelock at Hanover, and was there ordained as a missionary 21 May 1772. He went first as a missionary to the Delaware Indians on the Muskingum, afterward to the Indians in Canada and Maine. These missions were broken up by the Revolutionary war, and Mr. Frisbie was installed 7 Feb 1776, as pastor of the First Congregational Church at Ipswich, where he remained successful and beloved.
  
  Shortly after graduation he began to be a sufferer from a disease of the eyes, which for the rest of his life disabled him largely from study and writing, or at least placed great difficulties in his way. His few published writings show sound thought, delicate discrimination and great facility of expression. In versification he lacked little to entitle him to the rank of a true poet.
  
  His published works were: a poem of 180 lines, eulogistic of Moor's Charity School and Dartmouth College; an oration on the peace of 1783; a eulogy on the death of Washington; and several sermons.¹
• His first wife was Zeruiah, d. of Capt. Samuel Sprague of Lebanon, Conn by whom he had one child, Mary.¹
• He and Mehitable Hale published their marriage intention on April 28, 1780 in Ipswich, Massachusetts.¹
• Levi married Mehitable Hale, daughter of Rev. Moses Hale and Mehitable Dummer, on June 1, 1780 in Newbury (now West Newbury), Massachusetts, as his second wife.²
• Levi died on February 25, 1806 in Ipswich, Massachusetts, at age 57 For further information, see D. T. Kimball's " Sketch of the Ecclesiastical History of Ipswich, Mass.," published Haverhill, 1823, pp. 26-29. Also "Contributions to the Ecclesiastical History of Essex County, Mass., prepared and published under the direction of the Essex North Association."
  
  Mr. Kimball, in his centennial sermon of 10 Aug 1834, says of Mr. Frisbie, Sr., that he was " highly esteemed for his depth of thought, his liveliness of imagination, his incorruptible integrity, his interesting and profitable conversation, his fervency, variety and appropriateness in prayer, and for his ardent love of his flock" (p. 27).
  
  A meager collection of the writings in prose and verse of Levi Frisbie, Jr was published under the editorship of Prof. Andrews Norton in 1823, with a brief memoir of his life and character by the editor, and the funeral address delivered by the same at his interment. Prof. Norton speaks of him in very high terms, saying that " his genius was as rich, his heart as warm, his virtue as firm, his understanding as clear and vigorous, as we may ever hope in the intercourse of life to find thus united again." Prof. Norton also says "The last act of his life was an expression of affection to his aged mother, who was adjusting his pillow," and speaks of his father as "distinguished for his conseientiousness and his sense of religion."¹

• He was the son of Rev. Levi Frisbie and Mehitable Hale.¹
• Levi Frisbie was graduated in 1802 from Harvard College, was tutor there 1805-1811, professor of the Latin language 1811-1817, and Alvord professor of natural theology, moral philosophy and civil polity from 1817 to his death at Cambridge 9 July 1822, being the first occupant of the professorship on that foundation. He was A.A.S.¹
