Elisha S. Brimhall1

b. 1786, d. January 3, 1829
  • Reference: 0054
  • Elisha S. Brimhall was born in 1786.2
  • He was the son of Samuel Bramhall or Brimhall and Eunice Humphrey.2,3
  • Elisha married Susannah Jordan Hovey, daughter of Major Thomas Hovey and Elizabeth Brown, on December 24, 1815 in Boston, Massachusetts.1
  • He was superintendant of artificers from July 1812 to Decemner 1813.

On Jan 1, 1814, he was promoted to 3rd Lieutenant.

On May 24, 1814, Col Walbach wrote from encampment in Buffalo: "Elisha Brimhall was by order of General Wilkinson appointed an ensign in the 9th Regt U.S. Inf'y on the fifth day of December [1813]. He has since done duty as such in that Regt, but has not [received] notice of his appointment from the Department of War.

"He is a valuable officer & I therefore hope you will forward to him notice of his appointment if possible and as soon as convenient.

"Ensign Brimhall is as worthy of a second Lieutenant as any officer of that grade in the Army, and it would be highly gratifying to me, and in my opinion, beneficial to the government should he have that appointment.

As 3rd Lieutenant in the 9th Infantry, was slightly wounded in action at Chippewa Plains, July 5, 1814.

On Sept 1, 1814, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant. He was honorably discharged on June 15, 1815.

On Sept 19, 1815, in Boston, Captain George Bender wrote: "At the commencement of the [War of 1812], Mr Brimhall was appointed a master artificer in the army establishment. With that appointment, he accompanied the army to Fort George in 1813, and there continued while the army remained at that place. During this time, he was in mast of the foraging parties and picket skirmishes as a volunteer. He accompanied the army down the St Lawrence, where he received his commission in the 9th regiment. In this situation, he acquired the esteem and confidence of his brother officers, unassuming in his manners, the gentleman in his deportment, and ever ready for duty.

"At the time of the late consolidation of the army, Mr Brimhall was a First Lieutenant. He is very anxious to fill a vacancy of that grade, but I feel myself authorized in saying if that cannot be obtained, he would accept the next grade."

He was reinstated on Dec 2, 1815, as 2nd Lieutenant in the artillery corps with brevit of 1st Lieutenant from Sept 1, 1814.

On April 20, 1818, he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant.

On July 1st, 1818, Brig Genl S Parker wrote from Fort Nelson, "Lieutenant Gardner moving resigned his appointment of Quarter Master to my Battalion. [...] this day appointed Lt. Elisha Brimhall to succeed him in that duty. [...] thought it might be advisable to give you and the Quarter Master general notice of this appointment."

He remained Company K battalion quartermaster commanding Fort Nelson until he resigned from his post on Nov 30, 1820.4,5,6,7
  • Elisha died on January 3, 1829 in Oakham, Massachusetts. His personal estate consisted of 1 clothes[?illeg.] chest, 1 traveling trunk, 1 chest for tools, 1 hat box, wearing apparel, old books, and carpenter tools, appraised at a total of $57.53.2,8
