    "Commonwealth of Massachusetts, County of Norfolk ss. On this fifteenth day of August... [1832], personally appeared ... before the Honorable Judge of the Probate Court now sitting at Roxbury ..., John D Howard, a resident of Dorchester ..., aged 73 years, doth ... make the following declaration ... That he was in the United States service from about the first day of June, A.D. 1776 to about the first day of Sept, A.D. 1777, as a seaman in the Continental Navy, that he was residing in Boston ... when he entered the service; that he entered on board the U.S. schooner Leo, and served ... under the command of Capt John Skimmer and other officers of said schooner were Dennis & Lewes Lieutenants & Pearson Sailing master; that he sail from Boston to Grand Bank, and there continued to cruise capturing several vessels and among them the Industrious Bee West Indian on which was converted into a Continental ship of war under the name of the Gen Gates. Also that he was in the United States service from about the fifteenth day of Feb, A.D. 1778 to about the fifteenth day of October, A.D. 1778 as a seaman in the Continental Navy; that he was residing in said Boston when he entered the service; that he entered on board the U.S. Brig of War Gen Gates, and served ... under ...Capt Skimmer and the under officers were the same as aforesaid; that he sail from Boston to Marblehead, from thence to Grand Bank & there continued to cruise; that he was in no battle, having been put on board [illeg.] Also that he was in the United States service from about the last day of October, A.D. 1778 to about the same day of October, A.D. 1779 as a seaman in the Continental Navy; that he was residing at said Boston when he entered service; that he entered on board the U.S. ship Queen of France, and served ...under ... Capt Rathbone; that he sail from Boston to Charleston S.C; that he was in the siege of Charleston, and the officers and crew finally made [illeg.] and the Queen of France was sunk by order of Gen Lincoln at said Charlestown."
