Elvin Gilman Hill

b. May 9, 1833, d. November 25, 1905
  • Elvin Gilman Hill was born on May 9, 1833 in Saint James Parish, Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada, When six months old, his parents moved to Calais, Maine. In 1855 they came to the town of Bellevue, Minnesota.1
  • Elvin Gilman Hill was a miller.
  • When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Hill enlisted in Company E, First Minnesota. He fought at Gettysburg. After the war in 1867 he went to California, returning to Minnesota in the fall of 1869.

In 1870 Mr. Hill bought 300 acres of land on which was a good water power, a grist and saw mill. This was located at Little Elk. At that time there was only one house in Little Elk, the one owned by Mr. Hill. It was a large log house with several additions. Mrs. Hill took up the work of housekeeping for her husband at once and in the early years of her married life often cooked for eight men. Her husband boarded the men who worked in the mill as the town was three miles away. There was no place else for the men to board. Mrs. Hill must have been a good cook, for Amos Clark, who was one of the men who worked for Mr. Hill, says that down through the years he can still hear Mrs. Hill call 'Dinner' and it was a 'most welcome sound'.

Beside the regular boarders, Mr. Hill's lumber crews often stopped there enroute to the woods. They too had to be fed.

Just outside the backyard fence were a number of Indian wigwams. The Indians were quiet but they had one disagreeable trick. They would peek in the windows. Later Mr. Hill built another home for his family. ...

At the end of ten years Mr. Hill sold his mill and farm. The family moved to 205 Southeast Third Street in Little Falls, where Mr. Hill had built a home.

In 1904 Mr. Hill received a government appointment as caretaker of Star Island in Cass Lake. For several months the Hills lived in a tent. Later the government put up a building for them to live in.1
  • Elvin married Isadora Alfretta Mix, daughter of Luther Mix and Lucia Elizabeth Billings, on January 22, 1872.2
  • Elvin died on November 25, 1905 in Cass Lake Hospital, Cass Lake, Cass County, Minnesota, at age 72 of exhaustion of the muscles surrounding the heart. Although he had been failing for some time, the decline in Mr. Hill's health in the final three weeks was very rapid and the end was not unexpected by the family.1
