- Nathaniel settled at Portland where he had a distinguished career as a physician. He received the honorary degree of M.D. from Bowdoin College in 1821. He studied medicine with his father and at Grey's and St. Thomas' hospitals, London, under Hunter, Akenside and McKenzie, and began practice at the age of 21. He was the first president of the Maine Medical Society.1
