'He has long been prominent in town affairs, holding positions of responsibility, a selectman for twenty-five years, most of the time chairman of the board, an assessor for fifteen years, most of the time also chairman, and cemetery commissioner for thirty-four years in succession, save one year; and as road commissioner, or highway surveyor, he has had partial or full charge of highways in Winchendon for more than thirty years.3
- He went into the livery business 1844 , in partnership with Henry Whitcomb, under the name Whitcomb & Fairbank Winchendon, Massachusetts.3
- John married Mary E. Lees on June 4, 1847.2
- In 1852, John Henry Fairbank bought the American House in Winchendon, Massachusetts.3

Institute of Technology, where he remained two years, intending to become a civil engineer. But his father urged him to remain at home and join him in the management of the farm. This he consented to do, and he prospered. The large and commodious mansion is jointly occupied by his own and his father's family.2

He has peculiar gifts as a presiding officer, and has served for many years as Moderator of Town and other public meetings.2

- Andrew Fairbanks was treasurer, and was a selectman for 15 years.2,9
- Andrew remained with his father, Artemas, on the "Fairbank Farm" which was originally cleared by their ancestor, Jabez, and had for six generations been handed down from father to son. It was one of the largest and most productive farms in the town, especially in fruits, yielding annually, in favorable years, more than two thousand barrels of apples, and was also one of the largest milk farms in the town.4
