  • Lucy Balch was born on February 21, 1779, daughter of Rev. Nathaniel and Joanna (Mitchell) Balch of Bradford, now Groveland. She was a very handsome woman, and was known among her acquaintances as "the Lily of the Merrimac Valley."1

  • Lucy married Samuel Perley, son of Nathaniel Perley and Sarah Dutch of Ipswich Village, on January 16, 1799.1

  • He was the son of Roger Balch and Sarah Perley.1
  • Perley married Sarah Perkins on November 20, 1808.1
  • In 1818 and 1819, Perley Balch was a selectman at Topsfield, Massachusetts.1
  • Perley died on May 2, 1858 at age 74 of stomachic cancer.1
  • He was buried in South Cemetery and his epitaph reads: "He was an honest man."2
