Thomas Deming1

b. about 1613, d. 1683
  • Thomas Deming was born about 1613.2
  • He was the son of John Deming.1
  • He was only about 17 when he possibly came to Mass. Bay Colony.Thomas was a possible brother of John and Elizabeth Deming, but because he seems to usually spell his surname differently, some doubt is cast on that concept.

It is known that Thomas established the first shipyard in Wethersfield, 1648. It is mentioned in several histories as the place where one of the first ships of the colony, the Tryall, was built.

Also mentioned was that Thomas built the home of his nephew John Deming, Jr. which is still standing and occupied. It is reported to have been moved several times. Those familiar with shipbuilding at this time, recognize some of the features of a ship in John's home.

Thomas was evidently not satisfied with his ship building operation in early Wethersfield and by 1655 he had moved to Farmington(?), then to Southampton, Long Island and finally to Easthampton, New York. When in Southampton, his name was spelled Diament. Other records spelled his name Dimond, Diamond, Diamont, Dimon, Diamon, Diament, and also Dyament.

Before 1663, Thomas had bought all the lands of John Hand in Easthampton, New York. The land records call Thomas, "senior," because he now had a young son called Thomas Jr.

In the will of Thomas Dimond/Deming dated August 21, 1677, he announces the proposed marriage between his son, James, and Hannah, the daughter of Minister James. A third will recorded on July 28, 1682 announces the death of his youngest son, John Dimond. This will also mentions the names of his now married daughters: Sarah Headly, of New Jersey, Abigail, Hannah Bird, Ruth Dayton and Elizabeth Miller.2
  • Thomas married Mary Sheaffe on July 24, 1645.1
  • Thomas died in 1683.2
