He was the son of Willaby Colby and Sarah Sargent.¹
1789, James Colby purchased a gallery pew in Dunbarton's new meeting house for £5, 18s.²
James married Susannah Stewart in 1789.¹
In 1791 James Colby and Susannah Stewart bought twenty acres with a house. The buildings stood about halfwayfrom the height where the "liberty pole" stood, to the wall south, on the westerly side of the road.¹
James died on February 15, 1829 at age 61.³
He was buried in Evans (North) Cemetery on White Rock Hill Rd, by Turee Pond, Bow, Merrimack County, New Hampshire.⁴

He was buried in Hillcrest Cemetery, Litchfield, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.¹
