Rev. Moses Hale1

  • Rev. Moses Hale was born on July 10, 1678 in Newbury, Massachusetts.1
  • He was the son of Sergeant John Hale and Sarah Symonds.1
  • Rev. Moses Hale and Mrs. Elizabeth Dummer published their marriage intention on January 5, 1703/4 in Newbury, Massachusetts.2
  • Moses married Mrs. Mary Moody on September 4, 1707 in Newbury, Massachusetts.3
  • Rev. Moses Hale was the first pastor of the church in Byfield Parish. He began his labors with a handful of members soon after the first church was built, at the time of his death there were about 155 members. He labored without a colleague contrary to the prevailing custom, but was eminently successful both as pastor and teacher He attained influence among neighboring ministers, " the first meeting of a ministers' association of Merrimac Valley was held with him." During his pastorate he baptized 736 persons of which record is made, and he buried many, 104 of the "Throat Distemper" in one year, 1735-6.4
  • Moses died on January 16, 1743/44 at age 65. The house in in which Rev. Moses Hale lived, the first parsonage built in 1702, was still standing as of 1889, somewhat altered in appearance, and the elm trees he planted yet remained. In the same house the celebrated Theophilus Parsons was born, being son of Rev. Moses Parsons, Mr. Hale's successor. (Vide Harper's Mag. No. 302, p. 168.) His death was much lamented by his people and he was buried at the expense of the parish.5

Moses Little Hale1

b. April 7, 1799, d. June 22, 1874
  • Moses Little Hale was born on April 7, 1799.1
  • He was the son of Thomas Hale and Alice Little.1
  • Mr. Hale entered the office of Mr. Joseph Balch at the age of 16, and soon became secretary of the Merchants' Ins. Co., a position he held till 1823, when he was chosen secretary of the Massachusetts Hospital Life Ins. Co., one of the first and most successful of the annuity and trust companies of the city of Boston. For forty-five years he devoted himself to the responsible duties of that position, declining flattering offers elsewhere, and even refusing the actuaryship of his own company. A Boston paper said of him, "a more careful, methodical, upright, conscientious and exact business man never stood in State street." He was a deacon in Bowdoin Street Church after 1851. He was long a manager and vice-president of the Mass. S. S. Society.1
  • Moses married Mary Lane Miltimore on May 13, 1824.1
  • Moses died on June 22, 1874 at age 75 without issue.1
